Further information: The programme aims to build on identification and registration efforts, including biometric registration by the Bangladeshi government. It also ensures appropriate, targeted humanitarian support to those in need of individual protection, considering the high level of vulnerability among the refugees. Background information: The EU's initiative aims to support the implementation of the bilateral repatriation agreement between the governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh, signed on 23 November 2017. This measure is funded by the EU's Instrument contributing to Stability and Peace (IcSP), and was agreed to be implemented by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). It complements the EU's emergency humanitarian aid mobilised to meet the most urgent needs of the Rohingya refugee population and host communities in Bangladesh and Myanmar. The European Union adopted on 15 January 2018 a €5 million programme to support the identification and registration of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, the provision of humanitarian support and a better protection of vulnerable individuals. |
