Commentary feature. Europe’s largest economy needed to recognise that a new Atlanticist pact was needed if the West was to protect its liberal values.

The author analysed a speech Why Europe needs a new foreign policy given by Federal Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel's at the Berlin Foreign Policy Forum on the 5 December 2017.

She argued that the speech failed to address three fundamental issues:

+ the future of Atlanticism
+ how to deal with Russia
+ how digitization was affecting the conduct of diplomacy, economies, politics, and democracy.
