Background and further information: The conference was co-hosted by the European Union (EU) and the Government of Kuwait, and co-organised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Over 600,000 Rohingya refugees fled across the border from Myanmar to Bangladesh since 25 August to date. Thousands more reportedly remained stranded and in peril in Myanmar without the means to cross the border into Bangladesh. Refugees arriving in Bangladesh — mostly women and children — were reported to be traumatized, and some arrived with injuries caused by gunshots, shrapnel, fire and landmines. A ministerial-level pledging conference was held in Geneva on 23 October aiming to raise the necessary resources to enable the humanitarian community to meet the most urgent needs of Rohingya refugees who sought shelter and safety outside Myanmar. |
