EU announces support package for people affected by the crises in Sudan

Background and further information:

The package includes €46 million to respond to the most pressing humanitarian needs in the field of food, nutrition, health, protection and shelter, education, water and sanitation. A section which amounts to €13 million is part of an assistance package announced earlier in the year. It also includes €60 million for developement, to support displaces persons, migrants and hosts communities.

Since 2011, the EU mobilised €422 million in humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict, natural disasters, outbreaks, food insecurity and undernutrition in Sudan. The core instrument for providing development support to the country is through the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa, as Sudan did not ratify the revised version of the Cotonou Agreement. The country is moreover part of the EU response to the food security and El Niño crises and of the Regional Development and Protection Programme (RDPP) for the Horn of Africa, while also benefitting from EUTF programmes implemented at regional level.

The European Commission announced on 23 October 2017 a €106 million support package to directly assist people affected by different crises in Sudan.
