Summary: The European Union hosted on 5-6 October 2017 the fourth edition of international Our Ocean conference. Further information: The Our Ocean 2017 Conference addressed the themes of marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, marine pollution, and climate change. The European Commission introduced the themes of blue economy and maritime security in this year's event. Our Ocean engaged participants from around the globe to make significant commitments. The European Union expressed its commitment to 36 tangible actions to foster healthier, cleaner, safer and more secure seas. Other countries tabled over 200 commitments, whilst NGOs, foundations, research institutes and international organisations announced 87 commitments. As a major game-changer, the 2017 conference for the first time mobilised at scale the business community in the conservation of Our Ocean. Corporate leaders responded with 100 commitments. |
