Background and further information: The joint letter is part of a coordinated action by EU consumer authorities to make sure that Volkswagen respects consumer law in the aftermath of the Dieselgate scandal and is proactive towards the consumers concerned. Consumer authorities were at this point still receiving indications that many of the cars affected had not yet been repaired. Volkswagen committeed to repairing all affected cars by autumn 2017, following talks with the European Commission in 2016. National consumer authorities decided to send the letter to confirm this commitment. The Commission requested that all affected Volkswagen cars should be brought into full conformity with type approval rules. The European Commission and national consumer authorities sent on 7 September 2017 a letter to the CEO of Volkswagen urging the group to swiftly repair all cars affected by the Dieselgate scandal and to confirm its commitment to the initial pledge. |
