When the 2017 German general the campaign got under way, the Social Democrats (SPD) struggled to make themselves heard and Angela Merkel tried to campaign as little as possible – she knew that a dull campaigning season should tilt the odds in her favour. The opinion polls indicated that Merkel's Christian Democrats would be the largest party in the new parliament, but would need a partner to command a majority. This article considers the coalition options.
