Report of a speech given by Michael Gove, United Kingdom Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to Danish fishing industry representatives in Denmark on the 31 July 2017. He surprised both the Danish and some UK fishing representatives by suggesting that even after the UK had left the EU that some fishing would be permitted in UK territorial water by fisherman of other nations. DEFRA subsequently stated 'Leaving the EU means we will take back control of our territorial waters. As we have always said, other countries will be able to access our waters – but for the first time in 50 years it will be on our terms and under our control. We will allocate quotas on the basis of what is scientifically sustainable, making sure we have a healthy marine environment and profitable fishing industry in the UK'. The pro-Brexit organisation Fishing for Leave said on the 4 August 2017: '... Michael Gove’s comments to the Danish fishing industry are astonishing and disappointing'. 'Even if the UK fleet didn’t have the short-term capacity, the priority should be to husband and utilise our own nations resources to build our industry and communities back up, not just forgo them to the EU'. |
