Reports on the political instability registered in Slovakia in March 2018, following the assassination of Slovak journalist Ján Kuciak. Further information: Robert Fico announced his resignation as Slovakia's Prime Minister on 14 March 2018, in an attempt to tame growing calls for an early election as a result of the murder of Mr Kuciak and his fiancée - an event which shocked the Slovak society and caused concern among national and international stakeholders. Tens of thousands of Slovaks have been protesting since the murder of the journalist, who investigated corruption and links between politicians and businessmen. The protesters have been demanding guarantees of an independent investigation of the case. + Investigative journalist murdered in Slovakia, February 2018 The country's President Andrej Kiska asked Deputy Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini to form a new government based on the same three-party coalition, allowing them to remain in power. Mr Pellegrini later presented the Head of State with a list of signatures showing a supporting majority in Parliament. The new government was officially appointed on 22 March. Mr Fico vowed to remain leader of his Smer Party, despite not holding the office as head of government. He had run against Mr Kiska in the 2014 presidential election, and both figures sustained a public distance since then and throughout the crisis following the assassination case. On 17 April 2018, the chief of the police, Tibor Gaspar, resigned. |
