The United Kingdom government issued an apology on the 23 August 2017 to some 100 EU citizens who mistakenly received deportation threats from the Home Office. The letters informed the recipients that they had one month to leave or be forcibly removed from the country. In the apology the Home Office said the rights of EU nationals in the UK 'remain unchanged'. Prime Minister Theresa May called it an 'unfortunate mistake'. Yvette Cooper, the Labour Party Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, said the error was disgraceful and would have caused anxiety and distress for the families affected. |
