Background: The revision process of the Carcinogens and Mutagens Directive started in 2008. The Juncker Commission put forward its first proposal on this regard in May 2016, expanding the scope of the Directive and by including and/or revising occupational limit exposure values for a number of cancer-causing chemical agents in the light of new scientific data. The Council of the European Union agreed on its general approach on the draft law in October 2016. The European Parliament's relevant committee approved its position in February 2017. The two institutions reached a provision agreement on this proposal on 28 June. A separate second proposal on this subject was put forward by the European Commission in January 2017, addressing a further seven priority chemical agents. The Council of the European Union's committee of representatives confirmed on 11 July 2017 a provision agreement reached with the European Parliament on a draft proposal amending the Directive protecting workers from exposure to carcingens or mutagens in the workplace. |
