UN Secretary General António Guterres had persuaded the representatives of the Greek and Turkish Cypriots, Nikos Anastasiades and Mustafa Akıncı, to reinitiate their dialogue. There was little sign of willingness to compromise in the media ahead of the new round of talks. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced in the early hours of the 7 July 2017 that he was 'deeply sorry to inform you that despite very strong commitment and the engagement of all the parties… the conference on Cyprus was closed without an agreement being reached'. Reuters quoted diplomats suggesting that Turkey had appeared to be offering little to Greek Cypriots wanting a full withdrawal of Turkish troops from the island, although the Greek Cypriots had indicated readiness to make concessions on Turkish Cypriot demands for a rotating presidency. |
