On 21 June 2017, the Maltese presidency reached a preliminary agreement with the European Parliament representatives to strengthen cooperation between EU national authorities responsible for the enforcement of consumer protection laws. The agreement, which still had to be endorsed by the Council and the Parliament, aimed at modernising cooperation mechanisms to further reduce the harm caused to consumers by cross-border infringements to EU consumer law. The proposal was put forward by the European Commission in May 2016 as part of a package of measures in the context of its Digital Single Market (DSM) strategy. The Council of the European Union adopted its own position in February 2017, allowing for negotiations on a compromise text to start. |
