New EU rules on sustainable and transparent external fishing activities

On 20 June 2017 the Council reached a political agreement with the European Parliament on new rules for the sustainable management of external fishing fleets. The agreed regulation will modernise the regime of authorisations for fishing vessels and will apply to all EU vessels fishing outside EU waters, and to third-country vessels fishing in EU waters. The proposal was released by the European Commission in December 2015, and the Council agreed its general approach on 28 June 2016.
