Former Chancellor Helmut Kohl died at the age of 87 on the 16 June 2017. As Germany's leader for 16 years from 1982 until 1998, he was remembered for reuniting the country and for making a huge political and economic contribution to Europe's integration. Helmut Kohl was one of a small number of European leaders to have had bestowed the Honorary Citizen of Europe title. Others included the French politicians Jean Monnet and Jacques Delors. EU leaders and former heads of state from Europe and elsewhere, including former US President Bill Clinton, met in Strasbourg on 1 July 2017 for a memorial ceremony for Dr Kohl, called by some as the EU's first 'state funeral'. |
