Further information: On 27 May 2018, Italian President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella refused Paolo Savona as the Economy Minister because of his euroskeptic views, leading to the resignation by Giuseppe Conte and the appointment of a new PM designated, Carlo Cottarelli. On 31 May 2018, PM designate Cottarelli reported that there were new possibilities to create a political government for Italy. On the same day, Cottarelli resigned as PM and the Five Star Movement and the Northern League were given the go-ahead in forming a political government once they backed down from the name of Savona as Economy Minister. The possibility of a political government would put an end to the political deadlock and avoid both a technocratic government and new elections in autumn. The Five Star Movement and the Northern League reached an agreement to form a government with Conte as Prime Minister and Giovanni Tria as Economy Minister instead of Savona; Tria did not advocate leaving the euro, though was critical of the EU. Both Salvini and Di Maio were nominated deputy prime ministers. This government was approved by President Mattarella on 31 May 2018 and, with its PM Conte, was sworn in on the 1 June 2018. The coalitiongovernment was set to face a confidence vote in the two houses of the Italian Parliament (Senate and Chamber of Deputies) on 5-6 June 2018. In Italy,, after much machination and setback, a new government was sworn in on the 1 June 2018 as a coalition between the Five Star Movement and the Northern League (branded as Lega) with Giuseppe Conte as Prime Minister. |
