The German Bundestag decided in December 2015 to found an independent institute for East European research. The Centre for East European and International Studies (Das Zentrum für Osteuropa und internationale Studien - ZOiS) is an independent, international and interdisciplinary research institute. It started its work in October 2016 and concentrates on medium-term, socially relevant research on Eastern Europe. ZOiS Spotlight features analyses, insights and background information on current developments in Eastern Europe by ZOiS researchers and guest contributors. ZOiS Spotlight is published each Wednesday in English and German on the website of the Centre of East European and International Studies.The Republic of Moldova faces a deep political, if not geostrategic, rift in 2017. This becomes apparent when looking at the state leadership: a pro-European, liberal, but fairly discredited government on the one hand and a pro-Russian, conservative, but fairly obscure president on the other. While some analysts initially spoke of a Moldovan 'cohabitation', at least in the region the word now used is that of a 'double-headed' leadership |
