The European Parliament's foreign affairs and defence committee held a debate on 3 May 2017 with NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg. Members of the committee welcomed the increasing EU-NATO cooperation to fight human trafficking in the Mediterranean and boost cyber defence capabilities. Addressing the committee, Mr Stoltenberg also welcomed closer cooperation, highlighting that 'cooperation is now the norm, not the exception'. NATO and the European Union signed a joint declaration on cooperation in July 2016. The European Parliament backed closer relations between the two organisations in resolutions on the European Defence Union and the implementation of Common Foreign and Security Policy. |
