The German elections have been described as boring. The very word boring is indicative of how Germany's perception in the world has changed and turned away from the memories of the past century, traversed by German extremes. The German Chancellor has always embodied the country’s major aspiration in a given historical moment; for Konrad Adenauer it was democracy, for Willy Brandt passion (he taught Germans not only to respect democracy but also to love it), for Helmut Schmidt reason, and for Helmut Kohl reunification.
