Authorities in Serbia reacted angrily to statements by Albania's prime minister on a potential union between Albania and Kosovo in April 2017. Such union was seen by the Albanian leader as possible were the Western Balkans not be allowed into the European Union. This idea was backed by Kosovo's president but rejected by the prime minister. Serbian officials criticised the international community, and the EU in particular, for remaining silent towards what they considered to be a threat against Serbia's interests. A spokesperson for the EU High Representative on Foreign Policy later stated that 'any form of political meddling disrupts the fortification of good neighbourly relations'. |
