The European Parliament's civil liberties committee held a discussion on 18 April 2017 concerning a proposal revising privacy rules for electronic communications. The plans were welcomed by the Parliament's rapporteur. However, there were also calls for stronger privacy safeguards for children active online.

The European Commission put forward this proposal in January 2017. The draft report comprising the committee's position was scheduled to be presented in June 2017 and voted in plenary session in October.
