The European Commission published on 28 March 2017 its road safety statistics for 2016.

The Commission reported a 2% drop in the number of fatalities recorded across the European Union compared to the previous year. It marked the return of a positive downwards trend following two years of stagnation. Over six years, road fatalities were cut by 19%.
