The European Parliament's internal market and consumer protection committee approved on 21 March 2017 its position on a draft proposal aiming to strengthen cooperation between national authorities responsible for the enforcement of consumer protection laws. The draft law brings new powers for national authorities to check whether e-commerce websites geo-block consumers, track down rogue traders or even order that websites hosting scams be shut down. The proposal was put forward by the European Commission in May 2016 as part of a package of measures in the context of its Digital Single Market (DSM) strategy. The Council of the European Union adopted its own position in February 2017, allowing for negotiations on a compromise text to start. |
