The European Union's International Cooperation and Development Commissioner announced on 17 March 2017 a package of additional support to respond to the crises in South Sudan, Somalia and neighbouring countries. From a total of €165 million in support, €100 million was allocated to respond to the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict in South Sudan. The remaining €65 million were planned to respons to the serious droughts in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya. This package scaled up and strengthen over €400 million that the EU had allocated in 2016 to address the humanitarian crises and the effects of El Niño in the region. It also complemented the €200 million the EU had allocated in support to the government of Somalia. |
