The European Parliament's plenary session endorsed on 14 March 2017 the informal agreement reached with the Council of the European Union on the proposed Shareholders' Rights Directive, relating to corporate governance and long-term shareholder engagement.

The proposal was put forward by the European Commission in April 2014. The European Parliament adopted its position in July 2015 and the agreement with the Council of the European Union was reached in December 2016. This institution still needed to formally endorse the compromise text, but its committee of permanent representatives adopted it on 16 December 2016.
