Swiss to vote on the introduction of a universal ‘basic income’ on 5 June 2016

The ESPN Flash Reports are produced by the European Social Policy Network (ESPN) established in 2014 to provide the European Commission with independent information, analysis and expertise on social policies. Swiss voters will be asked in a binding referendum if they want to introduce an unconditional basic income that should allow leading a decent life. The vote will take place on 5 June 2016. Both the Federal government and parliament recommend a “NO” vote. It seems highly unlikely that the proposal will be adopted.
