Adoption of position regarding the proposal setting up an EU entry/exit system

The European Parliament's civil liberties committee adopted on 27 February 2017 its position on a proposal establishing an Entry/Exit System (EES) to register data of third country nationals crossing the external borders of member states.

This system aims to speed up and strengthen border checks at the European Union's outer borders on non-EU nationals travelling to the EU. It is set to replace the stamping of passports.

The proposal was put forward by the European Commission in April 2016, building on the failed Smart Borders legislative package launched in 2013. The Parliament's position needed confirmation from the plenary session before negotiations with the Council of the European Union - yet to adopt its own position - could begin.
