The European Commission published on 22 February 2017 its European Semester Winter Package, which comprises an analysis of the economic and social situation in the member states, including an assessment of remaining imbalances. It also published a report on the implementation of the Fiscal Compact, a report analysing the debt situation in Italy and a report, together with a proposal to the Council for a fine, on a case of misrepresentation of statistics in Austria. The assessment is part of the European Semester, the annual cyclpe of economic policy coordination at EU level, and followed the release of the Winter economic forecast. The launch of the 2017 European Semester took place in November 2016 with the publication of the Annual Growth Survey 2017 and the euro area recommendations. This package shifts attention to the national dimension of the annual cycle, in the run-up to the Country-Specific Recommendations later in the year. |
