The Council of the European Union reached an agreement on 20 February 2017 on a common approach regarding a draft proposal aiming to strengthen cooperation between national authorities responsible for the enforcement of consumer protection laws.

The objective of the proposal is to modernise cooperation mechanisms to further reduce the harm caused to consumers by cross-border infringements to EU consumer law.

The proposal was put forward by the European Commission in May 2016 as part of a package of measures in the context of its Digital Single Market (DSM) strategy.
