Declaration of the 8th Panama Institutionalised Ministerial Meeting of the EU and the Rio Group, Panama, 11-12.2.98

The VIIIth Institutionalized Ministerial Meeting between the Rio Group and the European Union was held in Panama City, Republic of Panama, on 11 and 12 February 1998.

During this meeting,ministers reaffirmed that the values of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, the principles of democracy and political pluralism form the basis for the cooperation and political dialogue between the European Union and the Rio Group. In this regard, Ministers underlined the importance of the achievements of eight years of joint efforts, and in view of the perspective of new dynamics in the relations between the two regions, they expressed their willingness to analyze the ways necessary for deepening and enlarging this new relationship.

The Ministers also underlined the excellent atmosphere of understanding between the two regions, discussed the questions on the ministerial agenda and adopted this Declaration.
