EurActiv reported in February 2017 that the European Commission had been persuaded to look into a reportedly deteriorating situation plaguing Euronews. This topic was scheduled to be discussed by the College of Commissioners on 14 February 2017.

Worries among personnel of this news service increased as a result of lay-offs and an alleged ill-defined editorial poject. Employees feared that Euronews was no longer an organisation with a European approach.

Euronews is a television broadcaster created in 1992 as a 'European response' to CNN. In 2015, an Egyptian businessman became the controlling shareholder of the channel.
