New research points to significant and widespread levels of public anxiety over immigration from mainly Muslim states. President Donald Trump’s executive order in January 2017 to ban citizens of seven Muslim-majority states from entering the US for 90 days, and temporarily freeze all refugee arrivals (including Syrians indefinitely) raised mixed feelings in European countries amongs political leaders. Amid these competing views, where did the public in European countries stand on the specific issue of Muslim immigration? There was evidence, says these Chatham House researchers, to suggest that both Trump and radical right-wing political parties in Europe reflected an underlying reservoir of public support. |
