The European Parliament's plenary session formally adopted on 2 February 2017 a proposal to allow for visa liberalisation between Georgia and the European Union. The proposal was put forward by the European Commission in March 2016. The Parliament and the Council of the European Union reached an informal agreement on a compromise text in December. The Council's committee of representatives endorsed it some days later, but it still needed full endorsement by the Council ministers before adoption. This proposal was linked to a visa suspension mechanism, which was successfully revised and was set to enter into force on the same day as Georgia's visa liberalisation. |
