With the selection of Benoît Hamon in January 2017 as the candidate for the Socialist Party, the field for the 2017 French presidential election was now broadly set. Marta Lorimer writes on the candidacy of Emmanuel Macron, who is running under the banner of a new progressive movement – En Marche! – and is currently receiving significant support in opinion polls. She argues that while winning the presidency remains a long shot for Macron, recent developments have boosted his chances. Over the weekend of 5-6 February 2017 Mr Macron launched his presidential campaign at a rally in the French city of Lyon. On the 21 February 2017 Mr Macron took his Presidential campaign to the UK to cultivate French voters there. He strongly promoted a liberal and pro-EU message. He also held a short meeting with UK Prime Minister Theresa May. Centrist politician François Bayrou announced on the 22 February 2017 that he would not stand as a candidate in the presidential election, offering instead to form an alliance with Emmanuel Macron. Emmanuel Macron outlined on the 23 February 2017 a more detailed economic programme. His full programme was announced on the 2 March 2017. |
