On the 23 January 2017 the Welsh Government published a White Paper Securing Wales’ Future. Transition from the European Union to a new relationship with Europe. On June 23rd 2016 the UK voted to leave the European Union (EU). The Government (the Labour Party in Wales discussed issues also with Plaid Cymru and the Liberal democrats in Wales) had been working since the referendum to protect and promote the interests of Wales during Brexit negotiations. A majority in Wales voted to leave the EU and it was clear this democratic decision must be respected. The goverment aimed to ensure that the democratic will of the people of Wales, and its economic, social, environmental and cultural needs, informed the UK’s approach to Brexit. The White Paper set out the main issues the government believed were vital for Wales as the UK moved to leave the EU. There were six areas that needed to be addressed in Brexit negotiations: + The single market and international trade The White Paper was jointly launched by Labour Party Wales leader and First Minister for Wales Carwyn Jones and leader of Plaid Cymru Leanne Wood in London. The document followed an agreement between Labour, Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats in Wales. The document was criticised by Conservative Party and UKIP leaders in Wales.
