Relations between Cape Verde and the European Union

Cape Verde has enjoyed close ties with the European Union ever since its independence in the 1970s, due to a longstanding historical, cultural and linguistic connection with Europe.

Following the signature of the Cotonou Agreement in 2000, the EU has agreed to further advance the level of cooperation with Cape Verde. This was put into practice by two different documents:

+ EU-Cape Verde Special Partnership (2007), which represents a political approach that goes beyond the ordinary donor-beneficiary relationship, thus meeting other mutual interests in the areas of security and development;

+ Mobility Partnership (2008), designed to give practical expression to the partnership between the European Union and third countries so as to ensure the responsible joint management of migratory flows.
