Summary: Communication published by the European Commission on 10 January 2017 on protection of personal data, which accompanied the adoption of two legislative initiatives on this matter. Further information: The protection of personal data is part of Europe's common constitutional fabric and is enshrined in Article 8 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. It has long been central to EU law, from the Data Protection Directive (1995) to the General Data Protection Regulation (2016). As the demand for protection of personal data across the globe, many companies have worked to align their activity with the principles adopted across the European Union. Likewise, several countries and regional organisations outside the EU have also been increasingly look to adopt policies to address those growing public concerns. In this context, the Commission believes the EU should seize the opportunity to promote its data protection values and facilitate data flows by encouraging convergence of legal systems. As announced in the European Commission's annual Work Programme, this Communication aims to set its strategic framework for 'adequacy decisions' as well as other tools for data transfers and international data protection instruments.
