Introduction of compulsory education and training up to the age of 18 in Austria

The ESPN Flash Reports are produced by the European Social Policy Network (ESPN) established in 2014 to provide the European Commission with independent information, analysis and expertise on social policies. The topics presented in the Flash Reports are identified by ESPN experts in the light of significant developments in their countries, or in some cases suggested by the Commission.

In Austria, compulsory schooling ended at the age of 15. Yet, a reform which came into force in June 2016 introduces compulsory education and training up to the age of 18. The objective of the reform is to prevent young people from achieving only very low levels of education, which often results in poor job prospects.
