Statement by HRVP Mogherini and Commissioner Mimica on The Gambia

On the 10 December 2016, High Representative of the European Union Frederica Mogherini and European Commissioner Mimica issued a statement about The Gambia's Presidential election.

In the statement, they called on President Jammeh's to accept the results of the election and to stop calling for new elections.

The European Union strongly urged President Jammeh to fully respect the rule of law and will of the Gambian people as expressed on Election Day.

The UN, the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) and the African Union also all condemned Jammeh’s declaration as a threat to peace, and urged him to step down.
