Further information: On 14 May 2018, Croatian Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Martina Dalić resigned from both of her positions, due to her alleged involvement in the Agrokor scandal. Background information: Dalić said on May 14 that in agreement with the Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, she had submitted her irrevocable resignation because of leaked emails suggesting she had used her position to help associates benefit from the restructuring of the ailing food giant Agrokor, which was placed under state administration in April 2017 after it accrued huge debt. On May 9, news website Index published leaked emails containing pieces of correspondence between Dalic and various consultants, lawyers and brokers who later became members of the state extraordinary management of Agrokor, or whose companies made lucrative deals with Agrokor. The Deputy PM rejected media allegations which accused her of helping friends in the process of passing a law on the state management of Agrokor. She said that in passing the law she was the main author but she also had the obligation to make contacts with lawyers and experts outside the government; according to her, there was no secrecy in the process. In saying so, she had the trust of the Prime Minister. The opposition, led by the Social Democrats and centre-right Most (“Bridge”) party, said it was unacceptable that Dalic had allowed the same consultants who drew up the rescue plan to be paid to roll it out, calling it a conflict of interest. |
