Negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the European Commission on securing winter gas

In an apparent U-turn, Ukraine requested the European Commission’s mediation for securing its gas purchases from Gazprom, media sources suggested on 20 July 2016.

Vice-President for the Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič was asked if the Commission would again be involved in securing Ukraine’s gas purchases from Russia, which are also needed to secure the transit of Russian gas to the European Union.

This was one of the discussion topics of Ukraine's prime minister visit to Brussels.
