The European Parliament's energy committee amended and approved on 13 October 2016 two separate draft proposals regarding the European Union's energy security policy.

One of the proposals concerns the emergency supply of gas. Under the draft law, a member state facing an emergency gas shortage could call on other member states to supply it with gas via 'supply corridors' that would link EU countries into seven transnational regions, the so-called 'regional solidarity mechanism'.

The remaining draft law aims to require member states to notify the European Commission when they negotiate energy supply deals with third parties.

The energy security package was proposed by the European Commission on 16 February.
