Upgrading the Basel standards: from Basel III to Basel IV?

This briefing was prepared by the Economic Governance Support Unit of DG Internal Policies of the European Parliament in advance of ECON’s Open Coordinators and Banking Union Working Group meeting on 12 October 2016 with Mr. Bill Coen, Secretary General of the BCBS.

It first describes the evolution of the Basel framework since the first standards were enacted, and describes the ongoing revisions of the Basel III framework. Finally the main findings of different impact assessments are reminded, as well as the different positions of various stakeholders.
