The European Parliament's plenary session approved a non-binding resolution on 6 October 2016 regarding the safety of materials coming into contact with food.

Members of the parliament considered that EU-wide safety rules were needed for more of such materials. They noted that only some of them, such as plastics and ceramics, were being tested for safety for human health. Others, including varnishes and coatings, inks and adhesives, had yet to be fully tested.
