On the 26 September 2016, a speech “United against Hate Speech on the Web: Where do we stand?” was delivered by the Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Věra Jourová , at the Conference with German Justice Minister, Heiko Maas.

Because of the recently growing intensity of this phenomenon, the European Commission agreed with major IT companies on a code of conduct to counter illegal hate speech online in May 2016. In this context, the Commissioner also reminded the murder of MP Jo Cox and the campaign against foreigners after Brexit or against the migrants in the rest of the Europe.
