Statement by the Spokesperson on Togo’s accession to the Second Optional Protocol to the ICCPR aiming at the abolition of the death penalty

On the 20 September 2016, the European Union welcomed Togo’s decision to join the 1989 Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and abolish the death penalty. It is believed that this step will encourage other African countries to follow the abolitionist trend.
