At least 42 people drowned after a migrant boat capsized off the Egyptian coast, according to officials' information on 21 September 2016. The boat was carrying about 600 passengers, of whom about 150 were rescued. It capsized off the coast of Kafr al-Sheikh.

The incident followed the warning made by the European Union's border agency that increasing numbers of migrants heading to Europe were using Egypt as a departure point.
