The UN General Assembly hosted a high-level summit to address large movements of refugees and migrants in New York on the 19 September 2016, with the aim of bringing countries together behind a more humane and coordinated approach. This is the first time the General Assembly had called for a summit at the Heads of State and Government level on large movements of refugees and migrants and it was seen as an opportunity to come up with a blueprint for a better international response. It was a watershed moment to strengthen governance of international migration and a unique opportunity for creating a more responsible, predictable system for responding to large movements of refugees and migrants. At the summit world leaders adopted the New York Declaration, which expressed their political will to protect the rights of refugees and migrants, to save lives and share responsibility for large movements on a global scale. The New York Declaration contained bold commitments both to address current issues and to prepare the world for future challenges, including, to start negotiations leading to an international conference and the adoption of a global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration in 2018, as well as, to: + Protect the human rights of all refugees and migrants, regardless of status.
