Poland’s Interior Minister Mariusz Błaszczak and Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski came to London on the 5 September 2016 to meet with Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Amber Rudd over a number of alleged racist attacks against the Polish community in the London Borough of Harlow, and other parts of the country, following the EU referendum in the UK in June 2016.

One man had been killed, and at least three others seriously injured in a number of attacks since the 27 August 2016 Harlow.

People of Polish origin overtook Indians as the largest foreign-born group in the United Kingdom in 2015, at an estimated 831,000. They were also said to have created over 20,000 limited companies, the third-biggest number among EU citizens after Germans and the Irish.

Poland deputy Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told The Guardian that Poland was keen to act as an intermediary between the UK and the EU in the Brexit negotiations, but wanted full protection and rights for people of Polish origin living and working in the UK. The UK would have to make concessions on the issue of free movement of people. Nevertheless, Mr Morawiecki also said that as the years progressed he expected many Poles to return to Poland as its economy expanded.
