Senior officials from Russia's energy firm Gazprom stated in August 2016 that they were resuming work on a gas pipeline project connecting Russia and Turkish, the so-called Turkish Stream. This project aimed at bringing gas resources into Europe through Turkey.

The Turkish Stream was designed to run under the Black Sea via Turkey to Greece. It was later on scrapped after Turkey shot down in 2015 a Russian jet which it said had crossed into its airspace from Syria, leading to a deterioration of the relations between these two countries. In June 2016, these relations were reset, as Turkey apologised for the incident.
